Created by Rob Sawyer, Modified on Mon, 1 Sep at 11:53 PM by Rob Sawyer

Adding a plant to your XPlant account allows you to track its growth, manage stages, and monitor tissue culture experiments efficiently. Follow these steps to ensure your plant is recorded accurately.

Step 1: Open the Add Plant Form

  1. Navigate to the Plants section in your dashboard.

  2. Click Add New Plant.

  3. The form will open with fields for Name, Taxonomy, Source, Status, and Notes.

Step 2: Enter Plant Name

You can identify your plant either by its Common Name or its Scientific Name (Genus, Species, Family).

  • Common Name: e.g., Banana

  • Genus: e.g., Musa

  • Species: e.g., acuminata

  • Family: e.g., Musaceae

Tips:

  • Entering a common name will automatically suggest scientific names if available.

  • You can also type the genus and species directly to generate the canonical name.

  • The Canonical Name field will update automatically from your entries and is read-only.

Step 3: Select Plant Status

The status field helps you track the plant's current stage or condition. Options include:

  • In Culture – Actively growing in a controlled environment.

  • Dormant – Not currently being cultured.

  • Harvested – Plant has been collected or processed.

  • Other – Custom status for unique cases.

Hover over the info icon next to the status to see a short description of each option.

Step 4: Add Source and Notes

  • Source: Enter where the plant came from, e.g., “Greenhouse A” or “TC Vendor.”

  • Notes: Record any relevant information about the plant, such as propagation details, observations, or special care instructions.

Step 5: Review and Submit

  1. Make sure at least one of the following is filled out:

    • Common Name

    • Both Genus and Species

  2. Ensure all other relevant fields are completed.

  3. Click Save / Submit to add the plant to your dashboard.

Validation:

  • If a required field is missing, you’ll see an error prompting you to fill it in.

Additional Tips

  • Use the search suggestions to quickly select names from the database.

  • If you don’t see your plant listed, you can type a new entry and show more results to find matches.

  • Keep the canonical name updated for consistent record-keeping.

Outcome:
Once submitted, your plant will appear in your Plant Dashboard, and you can begin tracking its stages, media, and culture history.
